About Rikers Public Memory Project

The Rikers Public Memory Project is an initiative aimed at documenting and sharing the stories of individuals affected by the Rikers Island jail complex in New York City. The project seeks to engage the public in conversations about the history and impact of incarceration, as well as to promote awareness of the social justice issues surrounding the criminal justice system. Through various mediums, including oral histories, art, and community events, the project aims to create a platform for voices that have been marginalized and to foster a deeper understanding of the experiences of those impacted by the jail. The initiative collaborates with local organizations, artists, and community members to ensure a diverse representation of narratives and to advocate for systemic change.
